Blocking is a technique used in Parkour, Free running, and tricking to convert momentum in one direction to momentum in another direction. Normal blocking, used by trickers and freerunners, converts forwards (in the case of a run-up) or backwards (in the case of a tumbling line) momentum into upwards momentum (usually used to preform flips). Reverse blocking is used in Parkour to convert downward momentum into forward momentum in order to preform a roll.

Types of blocking[]

  • Punch Blocking done after a run-up. The last step is a skip-step, and the feet are brought together. Commonly used for frontflips or sideflips.
  • Gather step Rather than performing a skip-step, the feet are kept apart and the practitioner dives into the move. More suitable for large gaps. Commonly used for frontflips or sideflips.
  • Lift and push One leg is used to push off while the other it used to kick upwards for momentum, either behind or in front. Moves that use this type of takeoff include the flashkick, aerial and webster.
  • Reverse blocking Blocking used to convert downward momentum into forwards momentum. Used after a landing to roll.

Tips[]

  • Land softly as if trying to land on bubble wrap without popping any bubbles, then spring off. Do not stomp down hard, as this will damage the knees.
