A backwards roll is a roll going backwards along the spine, rather than forwards or sideways. A backwards roll can be used when dropping from a hanging position to dampen the fall. It can also be used if a forward roll is not possible in your particular situation. Here is how to perform a backwards roll
- Stand parallel to the ground
- Enter a squatting position using a little bit of momentum
- Push backwards diagonally along your spine
- Get up, optionally using hands for support
